From 8 to 11 June, Ukmergė hosted a delegation from 16 European Union (EU) countries - Portugal, Bulgaria, France, Slovakia, Spain, Estonia, Malta, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic and Romania.
Ukmergė District Municipality Administration is participating in the International Project "We are a Union of Equality, so Let's Be United in Diversity" together with the CARAVELA-APCE Association from Portugal. The aim of the Project is to raise awareness of the crucial role of women in a wide range of fields in different EU countries.
On 9 June, Edita Balžekienė, Coordinator of Inter-institutional Cooperation of Ukmergė District Municipality, welcomed the delegation in Vilnius. In cooperation with Vilnius City Municipality, a conference was organised to present the Lithuanian strategy on gender equality. Presentations were given by Milda Janeikaitė and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Giedrė Purvaneckienė, lecturers of the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania and the Women's Information Centre.
On 10 June, the Ukmergė Local History Museum hosted a Conference where representatives from each country made presentations on women's rights and democracy in Europe.
Eugenijus Kuodelis, Vice-Mayor of Ukmergė District Municipality, welcomed the participants and emphasised the relevance of the Project, the necessity to share and adopt international experiences and good practices, and wished all the countries to establish and develop useful contacts.
The film about Ukmergė, its companies and people working in different sectors was shown to the guests.
Students of the Ukmergė Art School- Ginas Kilijonas (teacher Tautvydas Kuoras, concertmaster Laura Burneikienė), Martyna Zakarauskaitė (teacher Virginija Mažeikienė, concertmaster Rasa Ermolavičienė), the saxophone quartet Mantas Mulevičius, Emilija Kardauskaite, Ugnius Tvarijonas, and their teacher Nikolajus Kononov, performed at the event.
The delegation got acquainted with the Ukmergė region - visited the Old Town of Ukmergė, the birthplace and Manor House of President Antanas Smetona, tasted traditional Lithuanian dishes.
